Only two people died of coronavirus in Zimbabwe today, down from 10 yesterday, and there were only 58 new cases.

The drop came as President Emmerson Mnangagwa urged Zimbabweans to be vaccinated as this was the only way for people to protect themselves and their families.

Mnangagwa’s deputy Constantino Chiwenga was the first to be vaccinated on Thursday when the country rolled out its vaccination programme using 200 000 doses donated by China.

According to the Ministry of Health, 39 people, including eight journalists, were vaccinated at the launch.

Mnangagwa said he too was going to be vaccinated.

“The vaccine is safe and an effective antidote against Covid19 and indeed part of our weaponry in fighting the virus,” Mnangagwa said.

“All of us including myself will get vaccinated, so should you, my dear Zimbabweans if we are protect ourselves and families”

Some 124 people recovered from the virus today resulting in the number of active cases dropping to 2 240.

So far 35 768 people have contracted the virus, 32 096 have recovered and 1 432 have died.

Harare now has 884 active cases followed by Manicaland with 557, Mashonaland West with 224 and Bulawayo, 137.
