Zimbabwe records 227 new coronavirus cases in one day, 101 in Mashonaland West

Zimbabwe recorded 227 new coronavirus cases yesterday, all local, with 101 of them being in Mashonaland West.

It also recoded three deaths one in Harare and two in Manicaland pushing the national death toll to 313, that for Harare to 143, and Manicaland to 32.

There were 103 recoveries which saw the number of active cases increase to 1 734.

All 10 provinces recorded new cases with Bulawayo coming in second at 63 but it had 73 recoveries.

The cumulative number of cases now stands at 11 749 but some 9 702 people have recovered.

Bulawayo continues to have the highest number of active cases at 572, followed by Mashonaland West with 275, Matebeleland South 274 and Harare 219.

Zimbabwe closes its schools today and they reopen on 4 January.  Schools have been one of the major sources of the virus accounting for more than 500 cases.

Globally the number of cases has risen to 74.5 million with 1.66 million deaths, 52.4 million recoveries and 20.5 million active cases.

South Africa, which reintroduced strict lockdown measures two days ago, now has 883 687 cases, 23 827 deaths and 85 275 active cases.
