Zimbabwe’s coronavirus deaths yesterday slowed down to 12 but the Ministry of Health said deaths for Harare had not yet been received at the time of reporting.
The number of deaths rose to 974 and those for this month to 611.
There were 484 new cases bringing the total to date to 31 007 and cases for this month alone to 17 140.
Only 297 people recovered. The total is now 21 377.
The number of active cases rose to 8 656 with Harare having 3 756. Manicaland had the highest number of new cases for the second day running and now has 1 392 cases followed by Mashonaland West with 611. Bulawayo is now down to 465 cases.
The surge in cases was attributed to parties people held for Christmas and movement of people during the festive period. Some reports said the 28–day peak period from Christmas was now over.
Zimbabweans have been jolted by the deaths of high-profile people including three ministers and a chief but some are celebrating the deaths as a “culling” of corrupt ruling party officials.
Globally the number of cases rose to 99.3 million people with 2.13 million deaths, 71.4 million recoveries and 25.8 million active cases.
In South Africa, though the number of cases and deaths continues to grow the number of active cases is dropping. There are now 1.4 million cases, 40 574 deaths and 146 773 active cases.
