Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Mozambique Douglas Nyikayaramba has died of coronavirus, according to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation.

The ZBC said the death was announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa at today’s cabinet meeting but did not give details about when or where he died.

Mnangagwa’s spokesman George Charamba simply tweeted: “GUTTED TO HEAR OF THE DEMISE OF Ambassador Gen (Rtd) Nyikayaramba, our Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique. We have lost him to COVID-19. Yet another diplomat, commander, war veteran and patriot falls!”

Nyikayaramba  joins the ranks highly profile former senior army officials to die of covid-19 who include Sibusiso Moyo, Paradzai Zimondi, Jethro Ndlovu and Perrance Shiri.

More than 1 300 people had died of coronavirus as of yesterday,  976 of them this year alone.
