War veterans leader Christopher Mutsvangwa has finally been expelled from the party raising questions about whether he will be able to retain his post as some of his colleagues in the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front have insinuated that the post cannot be held by someone who is not a member of the party.
It is also not clear how his colleagues in the veterans association will react as at their special meeting with their patron President Robert Mugabe in April, one of the resolutions that they passed was that there must be a stop to the expulsion of party members.
“The…primary role of the commissariat department must be mass mobilisation and political education of the party members and never that of expelling and suspending members from the party,” the veterans said in April.
“Kudzingana nekususpendana zvoita kunge ndiro basa remusangano. It is recommended that war veterans take over in the departments of security, commissariat and welfare not only to stop this rot, but to gain back the trust and support of the people of Zimbabwe.”
But the party was adamant that Mutsvangwa must go. In its letter expelling the former ambassador to China it said: “Having gone through your appeal, the committee found that you were neither apologetic nor remorseful in your behaviour. You continued to denigrate senior party leaders, bringing ZANU- PF into disrepute. Your actions and utterances violated the mended ZANU- PF Constitution Article 28, Section 262 read in conjunction with Article 3 Section 21 leading to your expulsion.”
War veterans seem to have been getting increasingly disgruntled with Mugabe and even supported the recent stay-away as long as it was peaceful saying Mugabe must listen to the people.
