Referendum in September-October next year

Zimbabwe’s referendum on the new constitution can only be held in September or October next year which implies that elections cannot be held before that. President Robert Mugabe had said elections should be held around June. Douglas Mwonzora, co-chairman of the parliamentary committee drafting the new constitution today said: “It would be unrealistic to expect the document in or before September. Even October is only practical if there are no further delays. We want this to be out of our way, but the committee has been let down by politicians and lack of funding.”
