Movement for Democratic Change deputy national chairperson Tendai Biti was today convicted of contravening the Electoral Act by announcing the results of the 2018 presidential elections prematurely.

His lawyers have filed an application for appeal before sentence.

Under the Electoral Act Biti can be sentenced for a period not exceeding six months which means he is not going to lose his seat.

A United States senator had called on Zimbabwe to drop charges against Biti as one of the conditions for Washington to consider lifting sanctions on the country.
