US considered adding Jonathan Moyo’s daughters on sanctions list

The United States embassy in Harare recommended that Washington should add Jonathan Moyo’s three daughters onto their sanctions list more than four months after Moyo had been expelled from the government and the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front.

Moyo was already on the sanction list.

He was expelled from the government and the party when he decided to stand as an independent candidate for Tsholotsho after ZANU-PF declared that the seat was reserved for a woman candidate.

The move was aimed at fixing Moyo for being part of a group that tried to block the appointment of Joice Mujuru as vice-president of ZANU-PF.

Moyo won the seat as an independent beating both the ZANU-PF and the Movement for Democratic Change candidates becoming the only independent candidate to win a seat in the country.

The list submitted to Washington in a cable dispatched on 11 July 2005 said his daughters, Tawanda, Lungile and Nokuthula should be added onto the sanctions list.
