Councillor to build duplex flats

A Bulawayo city councillor has been granted permission to build duplex flats in Hume Park, along Ansdell Close, but said he did not know yet how much the complex would cost.

The flats will be built on a 1 245 square metre piece of land which the council sold to Clr Emmanuel Kanjoma for $311.3 million.

The councillor said he had only received his offer letter on Tuesday and therefore did not know how much the project would cost as he still had to see architects to design the complex.

Kanjoma had initially planned to build garden flats but changed his mind. Council, however, accepted his offer saying the proposed project was in keeping with the zoning of the land as the adjacent stand was a townhouse. The council also said the project would have a positive impact and would enhance the local townscape.

The piece of land was originally offered to Glenkara Homes to develop a recreation park but the offer had not been taken up.

The last flats in Bulawayo were built 10 years ago in Nketa and Nkulumane. The development of upmarket flats is viewed by many as a space and cost saver especially in areas where urban migration is on the increase.
