Former Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara has proposed a 10-point agenda which President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government needs to address.
He said the 10-points were, however, not in any particular order and should be executed concurrently.
- Reforms (electoral, media, political & legislative) to enable and facilitate free, fair and credible elections.
- A clear and inclusive roadmap to those free, fair and credible elections in 2018.
- Release of all political prisoners and those currently under trial.
- Security sector reforms, in particular de-linking the military from civilian mandates.
- Redress for all victims of political violence, Murambatsvina and Gukurahundi.
- Implementation of devolution and decentralization as prescribed in the national Constitution.
- Constitutionalism and general adherence to, and respect for, the rule of law.
- A sincere, holistic and systemic approach to the eradication of corruption.
- Economic recovery and stabilization, in particular fiscal consolidation and the elimination of the growing budget deficit.
- Shared and inclusive economic growth, development and prosperity.
Mnangagwa yesterday gave his cabinet one week to come up with quick wins and told them to use his inaugural speech to identify priority projects.
“Let us, therefore, proceed to deliver in line with the objectives of this target-driven cabinet,” Mnangagwa said.
“Our inaugural meeting comes against the backdrop of major socio-economic challenges that need to be urgently addressed. These include the scourge of corruption, the current liquidity crunch, low foreign direct investment inflows, low diaspora remittances, subdued export earnings and heavy dependency on imports.”
