Mengistu’s shadow

Former Ethiopian head of state, Col. Mengistu may be lamenting in Harare that he is broke and may be drinking a lot to while up time since he does not have much else to do, as back home things remain virtually unchanged since he left.

Reports from Addis Ababa say that Meles Zanawi’s provisional government has done nothing to ease the restrictions imposed by Mengistu. The reports say the country is disintegrating and with so many regional, ethnic and religious movements battling each other for control, the country could erupt into another Yugoslavia.

One head of department is quoted as saying: “Under Mengistu, we were not allowed to sneeze without written permission, and those regulations have not been abolished. So we continue to work the same way.”
